Essential Tips for Preventing Allergies This Spring

It is almost that time of year again! Warmer weather, flowers at bloom, and… allergies? Spring is the time plants typically release a lot of pollen. Some often experience a runny nose, itchy eyes and nose, and frequent coughing because of this. Luckily, there are a lot of proven ways homeowners can implement to keep these allergies at bay!

Check Indoor Surfaces

People who tend to have Spring allergies have to remember that there are often more dust particles on surfaces than in the air! These can be particularly irritating because once these surfaces are disturbed, such as when a person sits down on a chair, these dust particles will scatter and enter the nose or eyes.

It is always important to clean the surfaces of the home thoroughly and regularly. The simple act of dusting can be an immense help. Dusting the furniture will ensure that dust particles do not build up there.

Other surfaces homeowners have to keep clean are carpets and rugs. Carpets and rugs tend to be more feathery and have a greater surface area for dust particles to rest and settle. It is a good idea to vacuum at least twice a week to ensure the surface areas of these carpets and rugs do not harbor allergens.

Open the Windows To Let Dust and Pollen Outopen windows

Aside from the many surfaces of the house, pollen and dust can also be carried in the air as well. Though it's often good to shut the windows when there isn't much airflow to prevent external dust and pollen from coming in, leaving the windows open on more breezy days can help ensure the allergen-carrying air that is already inside the house gets to flow outside.

Routine Air Filter Replacement Is a Mustchange filters

Probably the most important thing a homeowner can do to prevent allergies is to frequently change the air filters in their AC units. Over time, the air filters catch various particulate allergens from all over the home. Since the AC unit is largely responsible for the airflow of a particular room, having dirty air filters can play an unfortunate role in causing allergies because of the particulate matter that they are pushing out along with the air.

Not only that, when the air filters are dirty, the air is not pushed out as efficiently. When there is no good airflow inside the house, allergens in the air may rest on top of the various surfaces of the house.

Changing air filters every three months ensures that the air that is flowing inside of the household is not only clean and sanitary but will drastically reduce costs as well. Clean air filters mean less energy expenditure and, therefore, fewer costs! That is why there is very little doubt that having well-maintained HVAC units is a crucial step in beating allergies.
