Heating Checkup Checklist

It might seem early, but now is actually the perfect time to make sure your furnace or heater will be in good condition when fall and winter come around. There’s not much worse than a mid-winter heating emergency. If you plan well now, you’ll be set up to succeed for those colder months.

Be Ready to Replace Your Air Filters

Dirty air filters harm your furnace’s heating ability and harm your indoor air quality. The problem is that with reduced airflow from a clogged up filter, heat can get trapped in your ducts instead of being adequately dispersed throughout the home causing your furnace to overheat.

Unfortunately, the only way to prevent dirty, clogged up air filters is to replace them regularly. It only takes about a month for your filter to get clogged up and you absolutely should replace your filter if its been longer than three months. Stock up on your air filters now and make it a part of your monthly routine to replace them.

Clear the Area Around Your Furnace

Your furnace needs a clean and clear area to work effectively. If you haven’t really used the furnace over the past few months, it’s normal for the area to not be in perfect shape. Now’s the time to clean it up before you’ll be using the heater nearly every day!

Test Your CO Detectors

Furnaces are one of the primary causes of CO, or carbon monoxide, leaks. CO monitors don’t last forever. They typically fail after 5 or 6 years. Check them now so you can get replacements ready and installed before the winter months kick in.

Get an Inspection from an HVAC Professional

You should get your HVAC systems professionally inspected about twice a year, once before summer for your air conditioner and once before winter for your heating. Regular maintenance is the key to a long-lasting system. Some problems just aren’t going to be spotted by the average homeowner while a trained eye can spot them right away.

If you need a furnace inspection, contact the experts at Sunset Heating & Cooling today at (503) 500-5866 or you can fill out a convenient online contact form. We are taking the COVID-19 crisis very seriously and are taking the utmost care to keep you and your family healthy and protected while we work.
