Tips for Improved Performance from Your Heating and Cooling System
Professionals are called such for a reason. They know all the shortcuts and tips that others don’t. Much of the time homeowners are just too busy to learn the tricks of the trade. But with knowledge so readily available, local HVAC professionals want to share a few brilliant tips to make your family heating and cooling more efficient, year-round. Not only does this help lower your energy costs and limit the risk of emergency repairs, but also it can improve the comfort in your home, which is what your HVAC system is most responsible for!
Try Adding Insulation
Chances are, if you live in a house that’s more than a few years old, you can probably improve your home insulation in a number of small but effective ways. Generally, when people hear the word insulation they think of the pink foam that gets installed in the walls and ceiling, but insulation also applies to things like doors and windows.
Properly sealing gaps in your window and door frames can stop the flow of air in and out of your home. Window gaps can often be sealed with caulk or silicone sealant found at your local hardware store. For doors, you can use weatherstripping where the door comes into contact with the frame, and a door sweep if you have a gap at the bottom of your door.
Curtains and Screens Can Help Control Temperature
Windows are a large factor in any house’s ability to protect against the elements. Curtains and screens, especially when used together, can help keep your family heating and cooling under control. Heavy curtains are not only great for keeping out unwanted sunlight, but they’re also helpful as a barrier for the cold air that may be seeping through your windows. If you have particularly drafty windows, you may consider purchasing blackout curtains with thermal backing to help block those chilly drafts.
Screens are good for more than just keeping bugs and debris out when your windows are open. They’re a good way of keeping the strong summer sun rays from penetrating your home and driving your cooling costs up. Plus, if you want to take it a step further, you can install solar screens, which are designed to block the sun’s rays, keeping your house cool and bug-free.
Use Your Fan For Added Comfort
During the summer months, ceiling fans should be set to spin counterclockwise. This creates a downdraft that moves cool air throughout the room, helping to maintain your desired temperature. Conversely, in the winter months, you can switch your ceiling fan to spin clockwise on a low setting. This creates an updraft that helps to distribute warm air from the ceiling toward the floor.
